Frequently asked questions

The following are the most frequently asked questions about Gillette skin care products and shaving with sensitive skin:

Gillette Clinical Protection Antiperspirant

Q. What is the difference between antiperspirant and deodorant?

A.

The difference between antiperspirant and deodorant comes down to their ingredients. In most cases, antiperspirants contain an active aluminum ingredient (which helps with sweat control), while deodorants do not. Because of this, many patients with excessive sweating benefit from regular antiperspirant use.1

Q. What are common triggers of excessive sweating?

A.

While every patient with excessive sweating may have their own unique triggers, some of the most common causes include2:

  • Increased alcohol intake
  • Caffeine
  • Citric acid
  • Eating spicy foods
  • Being stressed

Q. How does excessive sweating impact healthy skin?

A.

When left untreated, excessive sweating can damage and irritate healthy skin in the affected areas. Examples of complications if untreated include3:

  • Maceration
  • Skin discolouration
  • Increased risk of skin infections
  • Inflammation and irritation
  • Increased odor from bacteria metabolizing sweat

Q. Why is night application of antiperspirant more effective?

A.

Antiperspirant help manage excessive sweating by creating plugs that slow the production of sweat from the axilla. During the day, we have a higher body temperature and are more likely to be active, which results in the creation of less effective plugs. Overnight, we have a lower resting body temperature and a slower sweat rate, which allows for the creation of more effective plugs. With this in mind, we recommend instructing your patients to apply Gillette Clinical antiperspirant at bedtime for the best results.

GILLETTE SKINGUARD

Q. Is it important to properly prepare skin before shaving?

A.

Yes. Advising patients to use a face wash or scrub to help soften their facial hair and recommending that they hydrate their skin with warm water for at least three minutes before shaving will help soften hair and make it easier to cut without irritation.

Q. For patients with Pseudofolliculitis Barbae (PFB), what is the first step in minimizing irritation and getting a comfortable shave?

A.

The first step is cleansing the skin with a gentle scrub and warm water or using a shaving brush to remove dirt & oil from the surface of the skin, and release trapped hairs. This allows the razor to make proper contact with both the skin and hair. The next step is hydration. Moistening the face and using a shave cream will help hold the water on the hair. As the hair soaks up the water, it swells and softens, making it easier for the blades to cut without irritation. The following Q&As are also applicable to shaving with PFB.

Q. Can a dull blade cause irritation?

A.

Yes. Dull blades can lead to nicks and irritation. The blade should be changed when a patient experiences tugging or discomfort. It may also be helpful to recommend a razor that features an indicator strip that will fade to white when they are no longer getting an optimal shave.

Q. Can re-strokes cause irritation?

A.

Yes. Men average about 170 strokes while shaving, and almost 120 of these are re-strokes. When the shaving cream has been scraped off, repeat strokes decreases lubrication, which can lead to shaving irritation. Using a razor like SKINGUARD with lubrication before and after the blade minimizes friction and irritation. Visit our product information page to learn more.

Q. Is dry shaving ok?

A.

No. patients should always be instructed to use a shave cream. Shave creams have skin-protecting lubricants that help the razor glide across the face and hold in hydration while shaving. This will result in less tug and pull, less scraping on the skin, and less irritation.

Q. Is good shaving technique really important?

A.

Yes. Instructing your patient to shave with light, gentle strokes while letting the razor do the work is key. Counselling them to start shaving with the grain, then (if necessary) go against the grain for an even closer shave, will help prevent irritation. Visit our patient resource page to download our Shaving 101 patient educational resource.

Q. Should I shave my upper lip and mouth first?

A.

No. Shaving the upper lip and around the mouth at the end of the shave will give the shave gel more time to soak in, and further soften facial hair making it easier to cut.

Q. Should the blade be rinsed often?

A.

Yes. Rinsing the blade throughout a shave prevents buildup on the blade edges and cartridge and will result in better glide and more comfort.

Q. How long does a Gillette SKINGUARD cartridge last?

A.

Up to 20 shaves, even on sensitive skin. Every Gillette SKINGUARD blade delivers up to a month of shaves. To ensure a long-lasting lubrastrip, store your razor in the included organizer tray or face up—away from damp surfaces.

Q. Which Gillette handles fit the SKINGUARD cartridges?

A.

All Gillette SKINGUARD, Fusion5, ProShield and ProGlide handles fit the SKINGUARD cartridges.

Q. Is it important to use the right tools when shaving?

A.

Yes. Recommending patients use a nondrying, dermatologist-tested shave gel, to soften hair and help defend skin against nicks and cuts is important. Also, advising patients to use an advanced multi blade razor like SKINGUARD that has blades spaced closer together to minimize tug & pull in addition to its SKINGUARD technology between the blades that guard against irritation, will provide a more comfortable shave with less irritation. For more information on SKINGUARD Technology, visit our product information page.

Q. Can women suffering from razor bumps use Gillette SKINGUARD as well?

A.
